IFI Publishing a personal homepage
About us Research Study Events Navigation Search

Once you're at the ifi, you may want to create your own personal home page. Here you can find some hints on how to publish it: getting into the phone list, having your personal page be accessible to the world and getting a link from the phone list to your home page. Here are the steps:

  1. Make sure you have an email account and a network account. If you can see this page, and you use UNIX, and you are inside IFI, you probably have an account. If you use another system and/or are not sure, call Beat Rageth (5 43 22) and ask him to give an account to you.
  2. Let your name, office number, office phone number and mail be entered into the phone list supplied by Lotti Kuendig (5 43 11).
  3. Call your research group web editor to prepare a personal home directory on our webserver. This directory will be located under /home/arvo/www/data/groups, in the subdirectory of your respective group. Make sure you OWN this directory, and your group's poweruser/webadmin has write access.
  4. Prepare your homepage in that directory. Your homepage must be called "index.html" or "index.php".
  5. Send a mail to webmaster to include a link inside the staff directory to your home directory (like "Hi, I'm Marcus and I'm new. Please include a link to my personal page, located at http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/groups/...../index.html" from the staff directory. Thanx").
  6. If your email account name differs from your real name, ask him to include two staff links (one with each name respectively). But please stay lowercase.
  7. Once the webmaster prepared your link (he does update these things about once a week), your personal home page may be accessed via http://www.ifi.unizh.ch/~yourname/
  8. Wait one night for the automatic phone list update procedure.
  9. Now there's a link from the phone list page to your personal home page.

Please note that the ifi supports personal home pages, but that this is not to be confused with private home pages. Your home page should represent your academic work, not just your hobbies (if your hobbies differ, that is). Consult the Richtlinien for details.

As this description uses actual names of actual people which might actually leave the ifi (well, they must know), this text is due to be outdated. Please let me know.
